Diary of a Wombat by Jackie French, illustrated by Bruce Whatley
This book is sort of like Bridget Jones’ Diary, except in this case Bridget Jones has been replaced by a wombat who likes to eat oats and carrots. The wombat is very cute, though troublesome, and it makes me glad I live in Maine and don’t have to worry about wombats breaking into my house looking for food. This is a great, simple little book, and very funny, and the boys especially like to see the wombat’s distorted point of view. I would love to make some lofty claim that this book will help your children recognize that some people have differing viewpoints, and that it may help them to put themselves in the head of their foes in order to see their side of things. But that may be way too deep for a book about a diary-keeping wombat.
